The Avery Forum
Greg Melick established the Avery Forum in 2011 for students to learn about some of the world’s best wines.
Greg’s friend, John Avery MW, passed away in 2012, aged 70. The fourth generation to join wine merchant Avery’s of Bristol (established 1793), he was much-loved and respected by the UK wine trade and mentored Greg in Burgundy and wine judging.
“I judged wines with John for many years in Hong Kong,” says Greg, “he was a great promoter of Australian wines and judged at the Royal Tasmanian Wine Show five times.”
The annual Forum sees ten students gather to experience up to 40 wines – many from Greg’s cellar.
“It’s important to experience the great wines of the world, what they taste like, how they develop,” says Greg, “this understanding can only help our industry.”
This generosity and engagement aligns with Pressing Matters commitment to measuring our wine against the world’s best regions. In 2020 Wine Tasmania awarded Greg a Tassie Wine Stars Most Valuable Producer for initiating the Avery Forum.
