2022 R9 Riesling

Riesling
Coal River Valley, Tasmania
11.1% / 750ml

Very light yellow-green hue with aromas of citrus blossoms, turning to intense lemon/lime juice flavours on the palate, which is generous and persistent. A trace of lychee. […] - Huon Hooke

Pale green tinges hint at the vibrant acidity to come. Aromas of preserved lime, dried rose petal, and pear tantalize the senses, while hints of Cox's Orange Pippin apple add a touch of complexity. The palate is clean and clear, with juicy flavours that dance across the tongue. Bright acidity and a long finish make this wine a delight to drink.

I love the 'R' designations on the Pressing Matters rieslings. From R0 for bone-dry to R139 for sweet, they are an indication of the RS in the wine. The R9, in theory, should teeter on that fulcrum between dry and off-dry, but that crystalline Tasmanian acidity tempers any sweetness and it appears dry. And totally delicious, with crisp green apple, citrus, stone, orange blossom, fennel and wildflower notes. Pristine, with velocity to burn. Dave Brookes

Winemakers Notes

After selective picking, the fruit is gently bag pressed and cold settled for 48 hours. Post racking, the juice is inoculated with a neutral yeast and fermented at cool temperatures for around three weeks. After the ferment has been stopped at the required sugar level, the wine spends around 6-8 weeks on lees before being prepared for bottling.

Vintage Notes

The 2022 Tasmanian vintage was a modest one, like 2021 but with better and higher yields than 2020. A warm and dry spring was followed by a significant amount of rainfall towards the end of summer. Despite this, it was an overall good year, with exceptional fruit grown across the Coal River Valley.
